You're right about the dog and pony show. No doubt. It seems more about self-promotion than offering advice and consent to the president on the worthiness of his selection.
I would love to have a video of the hearings (or whatever they were) when men like John Jay and John Marshall were nominated to positions on the Court. I bet that would be an interesting contrast.
If that sort of modern deconstruction of language and public discourse interests you, you might like Neil Postman's "Amusing Ourselves to Death: Public Discourse in the Age of Show Business." (I don't recall much on whole language, but the themes are similar.)
