Mikhail Gorbachev a Christian?
Remember the 20th Century's most important revolution? The sea-change accomplished without a single shot fired?
What President Reagan suspected long ago, has finally been confirmed: the last head of the USSR, the man God used (whether Gorby liked it or not) to topple the brutal, atheist empire and bring freedom and light to millions, may have been a believer all along.
The Lord works in mysterious ways, His wonders to perform.

When I think back to the 1980s and early 90s--it would have amazed and delighted me to no end to have imagined that Gorbachev could have been a believer. Even to think he was an Orthodox believer, who may never have read much of the Bible, and who honored St. Francis as much as he honored Jesus--it's still amazing. Not only him, but his parents and his wife's parents. Wow.
And to think this man rose to become head of the world's most powerful anti-Christian, atheist/Communist state.
It reminds me of Elijah in the wilderness, after his defeat of the prophets of Baal. God informs him that He has faithful people in places that Elijah cannot even imagine.
In my wildest dreams, I would not have imagined such a story for Gorbachev. But looking back at the peaceful collapse of his nation--an end he surely hated and mourned--it is easy to imagine a Divine Hand at work, guiding his decisions and policies in spite of himself.
