Please Knock.
I bought this house. The previous owners had an open-door policy. The entire neighborhood was welcome. People would wander in and out at all hours of the day and night. Everybody liked to Pop in. Like Seinfeld's description of Kramer:
Oh, he loves the Pop-In. He's big on the Pop-In.
But when I moved in, I started locking my doors. Is that wrong? Is it wrong for a homeowner to want to regulate the traffic coming in and out, to assert some control over the movement of goods and services? People are still welcome, you understand. Our policy is Come One, Come All! But knock first.
Knock and it shall be opened.
Doesn't every homeowner do the same? Is there a nation on earth that doesn't control its borders the way I control my front and back doors? Is there a nation anywhere that doesn't hang out a sign like mine:
PLEASE KNOCK.

It's not just common courtesy for someone to call first, it is essential in this crazy world
of people who take whatever they want wherever it happens to be - even if it's inside someone else's home.
LOCK THOSE DOORS. Don't stop.

It's fundamental. Those who don't knock know there will be no reprimand. They see it in our culture. They see our former President treated like a celebrity when he should be treated like the letcherous, conniving vermin that he is. They see our culture celebrate immorality. Why would they assume we suddenly had a change in heart?

Interesting that you tie the border to morality--there may be a valid connection: many of us have no respect for boundaries, whether personal, moral, marital, or national. It's not unlike your death penalty post last week. We suffer from a failure of nerve.
